“In its tableau like form, the miniature is a world of arrested time; its stillness emphasizes the activity that is outside its borders. And this effect is reciprocal, for once we attend to the miniature world, the outside world stops and is lost to us.”

“Bad Dads VI”
Annual Wes Anderson tribute art show

Spoke Art is proud to present our sixth annual Wes Anderson art exhibit, “Bad Dads” – a group show of over 70 artists, being held as an exclusive weekend pop-up show at Joseph Gross Gallery in New York City’s vibrant Chelsea arts district.
“Bad Dads” began six years ago as a pop-up exhibition curated by gallery owner Ken Harman and has now blossomed through the years into a highly anticipated, memorable, and often costumed art event. Gaining international recognition, the exhibition has evolved along with Anderson’s eight feature films (as well as numerous shorts and commercial features) giving each and every artist a well of inspiration to draw from.
Although Anderson’s films take us everywhere from a fictional pre-war Europe to the far reaches of India and even out to sea, New York City is home to one of Anderson’s first real successes, The Royal Tenenbaums. His palpable connection to New York is only made stronger by the fact that he resides there as well, and as the exhibition enters its sixth consecutive year, it only makes sense to host it in such an exciting and diverse city.
Comprised of original painting and sculpture as well as a multitude of limited edition prints, “Bad Dads VI” is a wide-ranging display of artistry from all over the world. Exhibiting a host of different styles and talents, each artist approaches their work with the same meticulous detail that Anderson approaches his. Drawing upon the stylized world that Anderson has set forth, each artist was free to choose their own film for subject matter, resulting in a spectacular range of character portraits, highly detailed environments and iconic themes and motifs, prominent in each of Anderson’s films.
Participating Artists: 100% Soft, Rebecca Mason Adams, Daliah Lina Ammar, Anarkitty, Brianna Angelakis, Christine Aria, Kelsey Beckett, Jill Bencsits, Johnny Bergeron, Ryan Berkley, Joshua Budich, Ivonna Buenestro, Bungaloo, Sandi Calistro, Julian Callos, Keith Carter, Mar Cerada, James Charles, Matt Chase, Tracie Ching, Dan Christofersson, Charles Clary, Rhys Cooper, Cuddly Rigor Mortis, Max Dalton, Jessica Deahl, Tim Doyle, Emily Dumas, Matt Dye, Epyon5, Valentin Fischer, Veronica Fish, Monica Garwood, Sam Gilbey, Rebecca Green, Lauren Gregg, Dominic Guidote, Justin Hager, Primary Hughes, Charlie Immer, Maria Suarez Inclan, Martine Johanna, Tim Jordan, Alex R Kirzhner, Bartosz Kosowski, Calvin Lai, Conor Langton, Nan Lawson, Micah LeBrun, Adam Lister, Kemi Mai, Scott Mitchell, Guillaume Morellec, Danielle Murray, Rueben Negron, Conor Nolan, Chelsea O’Byrne, Lily Padula, Anna Pan, Rich Pellegrino, Audrey Pongracz, Patrycja Podkościelny, Michael Ramstead, Fernando Reza, Matt Ritchie, Michelle Romo, Rebecca Rose, Daniel Speight, Chuck Sperry, Meghan Stratman, Mike Stilkey, Dean Stuart, Mandy Tsung, Van Orton, Casey Weldon, Helice Wen, Bec Winnel and Alice X Zhang
We are extremely excited to announce our next upcoming art show celebrating one of the most iconic manga/anime of all time, Doraemon. The story of a young boy named Sewashi Nobi who sends back an anthropomorphic robotic cat (Doraemon) to aid his financially-troubled family, Doraemon has resonated with audiences across the globe, and remains one of the most successful manga of all time. Part of the reason Doraemon has touched so many people from different backgrounds, is perhaps that the story’s main character, Sewashi Nobi, is not your classic hero but a regular boy with the simple ambitions to help his troubled family—granted, he goes about this in quite a fantastic way. Doraemon serves as one of the earliest examples of science fiction in manga. The stories revolve around Doraemon’s futuristic gadgets, which unfortunately usually end up causing more trouble than good.

Crowded Teeth, David Chung, Jon Lau, Liten Kanin, Loris Lora, Paige Jiyoung Moon, Sean Chao, Shanghee Shin, Yejin Oh, Yevgeniya Mikhailik
Window Installation by Amy Van Gilder & Da Young Cho
On Saturday, June 27th, Flower Pepper Gallery is pleased to present An Open Diary, a collection of works by Crowded Teeth, David Chung, Jon Lau, Liten Kanin, Loris Lora, Paige Jiyoung Moon, Sean Chao, Shanghee Shin, Yejin Oh, and Yevgeniya Mikhailik. For this exhibition, each artist was invited to create 4 to 6 cohesive works, free from the limitations of theme or restrictions.
An Open Diary brings together a select group of artists who share a playful sensibility and enjoy highlighting life’s small and oftentimes overlooked moments. Participating artist, Paige Jiyoung Moon, paints memories of her “daily adventures” while artist David Chung creates humorous and heartfelt works inspired by some of life’s more arduous circumstances. In her interview with New American Paintings, Paige explains a bit of her process and inspiration: “When I hang out with my friends, I look around the environment where I am and imagine it as a painting. There are certain times that make me feel like I want to remember everything around me like colors, furniture, and people in the environment. I think of those days and some funny happenings that make me laugh. Later, I start sketching on papers to see compositions and details.” David’s paintings, on the other hand, reflect his sarcastic yet hopeful personality. He shares some insight into his pieces in his interview with BloPop Magazine: “For me, having my childhood overseas were the good times. However, when I moved to the States in my teens, that was when I was just about to blossom into my amazing awkward years. And being an awkward one of maybe 2 Asian kids in a predominantly white suburban town…well, it kind of helped me define my voice. So here we are today, I make work revolving around obnoxiously colorful and cute characters living in a perpetually awkward world.”
All of the artists for An Open Diary create entirely well executed works that display a high level of craftsmanship and a strong sense of narrative. Whether it be Crowded Teeth’s fun and imaginative paper cuts, “inspired by the need to make someone’s favorite something”, or Sean Chao’s delightfully delicate miniature sculptures that are created by showing just enough detail to “illicit amazement and yet enough imperfection to reveal that they’re lovingly handmade, ” each piece is sure to induce wonder. The artists of An Open Diary skillfully allow us to see through their eyes, as they emphasize life’s hidden moments and reveal pieces of who they are.
The reception is open to the public and on view until July 28th, 2015.

“La couleur de l’etrangete” - The Color of Strangeness
an art show tribute to the films of Jean-Pierre Jeunet & Marc Caro
Opening reception : May 9th, 6pm - 10pm
On view: May 9th - 30th, 2015
Spoke Art is pleased to present: “La couleur de l'étrangeté: Jeunet & Caro” (“The Color of Strangeness: Jeunet & Caro”) an art show triute to two French film-makers, Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro. Over 70 international artists were invited to create new original paintings and limited edition prints in tribute Jeunet and Caro's films, who are known for cult classics such as Amelie, The City of Lost Children, and Delicatessen.
The two filmmakers met in the mid 1980s and have collaborated on a plethora of different projects and films since. Though they have their own distinct voices (evident by their solo projects), both Caro and Jeunet have a penchant for fantasy and science fiction, as well as an overwhelming predilection for the darker side of romanticism. The two film-makers have created a unique visionary genre that is both theatrically-minded and surreally inclined all at once. Amelie, Jeunet’s most internationally acclaimed film, combines the spectacle of child-like wonder, as well as the intensity of adult love. The movie has attained cult status as a whimsical and clever monument to inexplicable nature of romantic love, a true French film if there ever was one.
For this exhibition, each participating artist was free to choose their own subject matter from across Jeunet and Caro's filmographies, resulting in a varied display of character portraits, elaborate environments, iconic themes, and motifs.
“La couleur de l’étrangeté” opens on Saturday, May 9th with an opening reception from 6-10pm. Artists will be in attendance, the event is free, and complimentary beverages will be served. As an added bonus, there will also be a vintage style Photo-Booth for attendees to enjoy!
Spoke Art is also teaming up with the historic Roxie theater and Midnites for Maniacs for a 35mm double feature screening of Amelie and City of Lost Children on Saturday, May 23rd.
Participating artists include:
Adam Ziskie, Lauren YS, Helice Wen, Thomas Walker, Justin Van Genderen, Chris Valkov, Delphyne V, Mandy Tsung, Jess Suttner, Tatiana Suarez, Dean Stuart, Meghan Stratman, Conrad Roset, Michelle Romo, Matt Ritchie, Fernando Reza, Michael Ramstead, Audrey Pongracz, Rich Pellegrino, Van Orton, Chelsea O’Byrne, Rueben Negron, David Moscati, Tessa Morrison, Guillaume Morellec, Joesph Martinez, Michael Marsicano, Kemi Mai, Adam Lister, Nan Lawson, Conor Langton, Bartosz Kosowski, Caia Koopman, Tim Jordan, Sarah Joncas, Aaron Jasinski, Primary Hughes, Greg Gossel, Godmachine, Sam Gilbey, Serge Gay Jr., Monica Garwood, Jayde Fish, Valentin Fischer, Jessica Deahl, Joseph Crone, Jonathan Bergeron, Charles Clary, Dan Christofersson, Matt Chase, Keith Carter, Sandi Calistro, Ivonna Buenestro, Ryan Berkley, Jill Bencsits, Kelsey Beckett, Derek Ballard, Christine Aria, Ana Aranda, Oriol Angrill Jorda, Brianna Angelakis, Rebecca Adams, Epyon5
